Origin: This town was first named Bloody Point, in memory of a victory by the early colonists over an attacking band of Indians in the late 1600's. Early in the 1700's, it was renamed Newington Parish. Newington is surrounded on three sides by the Piscataqua River and Great Bay, and is home to the Pease International Trade Port, formerly Pease Air Force Base, and the NH Air National Guard.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 542 residents in 1790

Population Trends: Population growth rates for Newington were both very high and very low, but the numeric population increase over fifty years was only 281, going from 494 in 1950 to 775 residents in 2000. After increasing by 112 percent between 1950-1960, Newington's population declined by 24 percent between 1960-1970, and also decreased over two of the next three decades. The 2003 Census estimate for Newington was 796 residents, which ranked 198th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2003: 95.7 persons per square mile of land area. Newington contains 8.2 square miles of land area and 4.1 square miles of inland water area.
