Incorporated: 1849
Origin: Sitting on the west bank of the Squamscott River, this town was part of Exeter until 1727, when it was part of Newmarket. It was called Newfield Village as early as 1681, then South Newmarket, a parish of that town. In 1880, a resident of the town, Dr. John M. Brodhead, presented his own library and $10,000 to the town on the condition that it be renamed Newfields. The town was so incorporated in 1895.
Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 516 residents in 1850
Population Trends: Population growth patterns in Newfields were different than in most communities. Decennial growth was high between 1950-1960, increasing by 57 percent, and 1990-2000, increasing by 75 percent; but between 1970-1980, population decreased by three percent. Newfields grew by a total of 1,082 residents, going from 469 in 1950 to 1,551 residents in 2000. The 2003 Census estimate for Newfields was 1,584 residents, which ranked 154th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
Population Density, 2003: 223.2 persons per square mile of land area. Newfields contains 7.1 square miles of land area and 0.2 square miles of inland water area.
