Incorporated: 1764
Origin: Once a part of Exeter known as Poplin, after an English mill town. The town was renamed Fremont in 1854, after General John C. Fremont, who was the first candidate of the Republican Party in the presidential election of 1856. Benton, in Grafton County, bears the name of Fremont's father-in-law, Senator Thomas Hart Benton.
Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 493 residents in 1790
Population Trends: Fremont's population grew five times larger over fifty years, increasing at an above-average rate for four of the last five decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from a 12 percent increase between 1950-1960 to a 93 percent increase between 1980-1990. Fremont's population increased by a total of 2,812 residents over fifty years, going from 698 in 1950 to 3,510 residents in 2000. The 2003 Census estimate for Fremont was 3,710 residents, which ranked 96th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
Population Density, 2003: 213.2 persons per square mile of land area. Fremont contains 17.3 square miles of land area and 0.2 square miles of inland water area.
