Origin: Granted in 1741, Epping was the last town chartered by Massachusetts Governor Jonathan Belcher prior to the establishment of New Hampshire as an independent province. It was at one time a part of Exeter, and was named for Epping Forest, a suburb of London.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 1,233 residents in 1790

Population Trends: Epping's population tripled over the last five decades, growing by a total of 3,680 residents between the 1950 Census count of 1,796 and the 2000 Census count of 5,476 residents. Decennial growth rates were below the statewide average over three of the last five decades, and ranged from a six percent increase between 1990-2000 to a 49 percent increase between 1980-1990. The 2003 Census estimate for Epping was 6,007 residents, which ranked 54th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2003: 220.1 persons per square mile of land area. Epping contains 26.1 square miles of land area and 0.1 square miles of inland water area.
